So we arrived into Nhulunbuy, Gove and dropped our bags off in the place to be home for the next 6 months. It’s a huge home backing onto the bush, town lagoon…mmm wondering if we’ll ever see a crocodile lurking in the backyard. We have a huge breezeway so that should keep the mozzies at bay. We dropped off dad/Opa back to work. Then it was time to get Mali familiar with the place.
Whilst I don’t plan to give you a minute by minute blow of everything we do see and hear…some of it is so iconic Gove that I will do just that. Anyway… we headed to the town centre, Mali was saying how pretty the place was then she expected and I was thinking how lush and tidy the main street into town looked, low and behold as we turned the corner Mali’s jaw dropped trying to take in what she was seeing. There mid street was a yolngu couple, he trying to get her off the road (she was just a tad drunk) in the process her singlet came off…and well it was eye popping for Mali.
As promised I took Mali to the pool. I’d told her how it was just the best pool and how huge it was. Though I was beginning to doubt myself, as childhood images are often so different to adult images. But the pool didn’t disappoint, actually it’s better than it was.
The change rooms remain exactly the same, but now the pool is flush with the ground, there are these great sails and shade around the place too. And something you can only get in a small town is to buy key access to the pool so you can come early in the morning or late at night…though there is a curfew.
One evening we did a fleeting stop at town beach I purposely parked away from signage…but Mali spotted it…CROCS STINGERS inhabit these waters. So she told me in no uncertain terms that she would not go to the beach, yes of course I totally agreed…NOT
